Review of the Brother HL 3170CDW Printer
The Brother HL-3170CDW printer is and A4 colour printer with double-sided printing, wireless connection and a high volume of
printing to suit most office environments.
The printer has a small footprint on the desk of 410mm wide by 465mm deep and 240mm high and weighs about 17.4kg.
The HL-3170CDW will produce the first page in less than 16 seconds and prints at a rate of 22 pages per minute whether
printing in colour or monochrome. It has resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi, however, some users have found the quality of photos and text falls a little short of other similar printers.
Automatic double-sided printing is included at a rate of 7 pages per minute, which is great for saving on paper supplies and cutting costs in the office. The HL-3140CW model is almost
identical except it lacks the duplex printing functionality.
The printer's network interface is by USB, RJ45 cable and wireless. The wireless is particularly useful as the HL-3170CDW
should easily connect to phones and tablets over Wifi Direct and Airprint.
The printer's human interface is a backlit LCD screen with command buttons.
The Brother HL-3170CDW comes with a 250 sheet input tray and a single sheet manual feed as standard.
The printer takes normal-yield (1400 pages @ 5%) and high-yield (2200 pages @ 5%) versions of the colour toners.
The black toner has only one version, the high-yield at 2500 pages @ 5%. These printers also require a drum unit every 15,000 pages and a belt and waste toner replacement at 50,000 pages.
One problem with this Brother printer is that if one of the toners runs out, the printer will no longer print until a new toner is inserted. This makes the printer a little risky to use when a toner is getting low, if you do not have a spare toner in the office.
Also, be aware that the printer comes new with a set of starter cartridges that are half capacity so expect something around 1000 pages before the toners are empty.
